There once was a glorious time in my life when I could go to the pool, sprawl out on a lounge chair, and bury myself in a novel by James Patterson (the ultimate storyteller), all the while sipping a chilled piña colada adorned with a cute little umbrella on a toothpick.
Those blissful days are OVER. O-V-E-R. As in GONE FOREVER. ANCIENT HISTORY.
Okay, maybe they’re not officially done forever. But with my two toddlers, it’s hard to imagine a beach or pool day could ever be that relaxing again.
That said, the beach, the pool and the splash pad are fantastic places to take your kids during the hot, long days of summer. Of course, keeping kids safe and having fun is critical to a parent’s enjoyment.
We all know that sun damage to skin can be devastating, especially in young children. SPF 30 blocks approximately 97 percent of UVB rays. So going for an SPF of 30 or higher is ideal. Additionally, “broad spectrum” is a sunscreen that blocks out both UVA and UVB rays.
Remember to apply a very liberal amount (my pediatrician says to act like you’re “frosting a cake”) and reapply (and reapply again) throughout the day.
In addition to sunscreen, hats provide great protection from the sun. These hats from the Gap are on sale.
Swim Lessons and Books on Safety.
Floaties and Other Safety Devices.
It seems like every child at the beach or pool these days have these “puddle jumpers.” They are U.S. Coast Guard approved and are fantastic for kids who weigh between 30 and 50 pounds and want a lot of mobility in the pool. They basically force a child who goes limp to float on their back. For smaller babies, these life vests are great, too.
I’m also a huge fan of a fun baby float – my one year old loves being in hers. Bonus: it has a removable canopy providing additional protection from the sun.
(On a side note, fashion is trying to make adult floaties happen. This should not be a thing.)
The Fun Stuff.
Of course, like a fabulous outfit, water experiences are made even better with the perfect accessories.
These Pottery Barn Kids beach balls are whimsy inflated. My girls have the unicorn one and they love it. PBK towels are also fantastic. They are warm, fluffy and can be easily personalized. And they are currently on sale!
Also, apparently this is old news, but I just discovered water balloons that can be BOTH filled (with a hose) and sealed in a matter of seconds. INGENIOUS! My four-year-old thought these minion ones were all things.
May your water days be filled with warmth and sunshine!
